The Big Forest NationThe M. E. Lyons YMCA January 2002 - Smoke Signal Hello and Happy New Year to all tribe members of the Big Forest Nation! As we see the final moon of the 2001 year pass we welcome in a new one. I hope everyone had a good holiday season and wish you a healthy and happy New Year! This past year has seen many fun and worthwhile events. As we go into 2002 lets take a look at where we've traveled and where the trail leads next. Most of you know first hand about the Camp-In that started the program year with crafts, activities, movie,
and a sleepover. And don't forget the traditional heartfelt promise during the opening ceremony as we, father and
child, sacrificed selfishness and impatience for the good of each other to be "Friends Always" and "Pals
Forever" - a great way to start the program. The month of December was a busy one, but for those of you who made it to see the storytelling of Shawnee tribe member, Fred Shaw, you know it was time well spent. With live animals to illustrate a story rich in Native American Indian culture it certainly was something to see. The price of admission can't be beat either, especially when it includes the Festival of Lights. Let us now look to the horizon for the Mighty Shawnee is calling the Nation together on Sunday January 20th
for roller skating and PRIZES! This event is filled with skating, music to get you moving, games, and did I mention
PRIZES? See the flyer for details. Hope to see you there even if you, like me, aren't used to having wheels under
your feet. Your Princess or Guide might show you how it's done or both of you could have a learning experience
together. If you haven't looked at the www.bigforest.org website lately or don't know about it you'll want to give it try. It's been updated and can provide you with such things as the calendar of events, Y-Indian contact names, phone numbers, and e-mail addresses. There is a special section as well for your tribe information so if you have digital or just standard pictures of tribe or nation activities they could be scanned and added. Information could be added as well. We'd like to hear from you! Hopefully most everyone has received everything they need by now but if any member does not have their headbands, program patches or books please see Brian Rawlings at the YMCA. He can give you what you need. Also, Mike Persicano is currently handling the ordering of leather vests for those who want or need them. Mike (a.k.a. Cloud Dancing) has scouted out the best deal he could find (being a former chief and wise sachem now) and is taking orders for them. Simply send him an e-mail at cugcoffee@cinci.rr.com and specify what size and quantity. He will then reply to you with the final cost and payment by check details. If for some reason e-mail won't work for you call Mike at 232-0282. The vests come in the following sizes and prices (excluding tax and shipping). As a guide (no pun intended), considering your child will wear this from kindergarten through third grade, a size 10-12 would probably be appropriate for the average size child. As you can see it's quite a deal for both Braves (dads) and their strong right arms (son or daughter). And finally, if you need any assistance or have questions as always please feel free to contact your tribal chief, the YMCA at 474-1400 or any member of the High Council below. We'd like to make sure the program works well for you and your child! Happy New Year and may the Great Spirit be with you till we meet again! Jim Farmer - Nation Talleykeeper |
