High Council Offices
Offices held within each tribe provide shared leadership opportunities for personal development of both parents and children. Training opportunities for tribal chiefs are essential for effective tribal functioning. These roles established in the tribes include:
Chief (Elder or Leader)
One of the parents is selected to see that there is continuity in meetings, conduct portions of meetings, and act as the leader of the group. He or she presides at parent meetings, delegates assignments and checks to see that tasks are being done. He or she is the tribal contact person for the YMCA and represents the tribe at monthly or semimonthly Longhouse/Nation meetings.
Assistant Chief
He or She assumes the duties of the Chief when the Chief is unable to attend meetings. He or she may accompany the Chief to Longhouse/Nation meeting and may be in training for the chief's job.
Wampum Bearer
This parent is responsible for the collection and safekeeping of tribal due and has the responsibility of collecting and forwarding to the YMCA moneys for membership, camp outs and so forth.
Tallykeeper
This parent takes care of attendance and minutes at tribal meetings. He or she might also be responsible for sending information on tribal meetings to the YMCA and birthday cards to the tribal Braves/Princesses/Maidens on their birthdays.
Elder, Sachem, or Advisor
The wise parent of the tribe-usually a former Chief-assumes this role. He or she reminds all members of the aims of the program, leads the tribe in many service projects, and helps them establish new tribes. |
